How Dogs Learn

Dogs are smart. About like a toddler is smart. Several behavioral measures show a dog's mental abilities are close to a human child who is 2 to 2.5 years old.

So ...  some knowledge of dog and puppy learning processes and cognition is essential to learning new skills with your best friend. Yes, with your dog. You have some bad behaviors that need to be corrected too.  Here's the Reader's Digest version -dogs learn in two ways — by association/emotion and by consequence/doing.  Just like your toddler or your sibling's toddler or your sibling. Read How Dogs Learn before you attempt the six Training Foundations lessons.

Six Foundation Lessons

These are the six foundations of dog training. The bones below each Training Foundation indicate the level of difficulty of learning the lesson with your best friend. We include 1-bone and 2-bone lessons for free 🎓

For complex training and difficult interactions, chat with our Dogologists or schedule Virtual Training.

Our approach to dog training is positive, force-free, and science-based.
